In the previous posting about how to buy quality decorative pillows, you know that not all decorative pillows are having the same quality. At least you have to know about material used, model and type of quality decorative pillows. This article will list step by step how to make your own decorative pillows
- Step 1
Choose a fabric that suits the area/room your pillow will be in. Think about what the pillow will be used for and it’s personality. If for decoration in a quiet room, choose elegant fabrics and intricate trims. If for lounging in the living room where there will be more action, choose durable fabric or textures that are machine-washable. Get about 2-3 yards of fabric for each pillow depending on how many pillows you are making and their size.
- Step 2
Measure fabric for the pillow by placing pillow onto the “right side” of the fabric and folding excess fabric over the pillow like a sandwich. The “wrong side” of the fabric should be on top of the pillow. Mark with chalk where the pillow ends and then add two inches from that marking- this is where you will cut.
- Step 3
Before you cut, be sure to leave 2 extra inches of fabric on each side of the pillow. One side will not have to be sewn; it is the side where the fabric folds over the pillow. Remove the pillow from inside the fabric and cut a straight line down from your marking, remembering to leave two inches on each side from where the pillow ends.
- Step 4
Once you have cut your fabric, make sure all sides of the fabric are even. It should be the same shape as your pillow, just a little bigger. Replace pillow into cut fabric with the “wrong side” of fabric on top of the pillow. Use sewing pins to loosely pin together the open sides of fabric on either side of the pillow, using one pin every inch. Slide pillow out through the remaining opening, you should now have one folded side, two pinned sides, and one open side. The fabric you pin should be inside out or on the “wrong side.”
- Step 5
Thread your sewing machine according to manufacturer instructions with matching thread on spindle and bobbin. Lift the foot of the machine and place fabric underneath the needle. Replace foot. Begin to sew down from the top corner of the fabric where your sewing pins begin. Remove each pin as you sew, be careful and keep your fingers away from the needle. When finished sewing one side, cut thread and repeat again on other pinned side.
- Step 6
Turn your pillowcase inside out to the “right side” of fabric.
If you are using batting, stuff your pillow at this time, making sure to get the batting down into each corner evenly.
Place your pillow into the pillowcase, and close open end so that the edges of the fabric face inside the pillowcase. Hand-sew or use the sewing machine to close off the open end of pillow.
- Step 7
Finish your pillow by sewing on decorative items and toss onto furniture. Enjoy your homemade decorative pillow at half the cost!
Now..you have your own decorative pillows at half the cost!!
